about

The audiovisual 'Binary Coalescence Project' by Aiv Puglielli is a direct creative response to the research of world-leading astrophysicist Dr Linqing Wen. A creative nexus between artists and scientists, the project explores the first principle understanding of the idea of ‘binary coalescence’ in astronomy, as observed in the research of gravitational waves and the origins of the universe.

We acknowledge the continuing custodians of the lands on which this work was created: Wurundjeri Woiwurrung Country, Boonwurrung Country, Yued Country and Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar. We acknowledge the Elders past, present and emerging of these lands and on this continent.

'Space+Time’ examines two coalescing black holes as perceived from Earth in a detection spanning a handful of seconds, and extrapolates this event into an 8-minute audiovisual work. Spread over a sequence of Inspiral, Merger and Ringdown, the work features two pianos in responsive interaction, supporting a single wordless vocal expression. The composition features an animated visual overlay crafted during the digital capture process.

'Continuum' features real gravitational wave detections, measured on the audio band, with sampled manipulations and verbatim spoken word as a conceptual composition of electronic beats and wave samples exploring the idea of the pursuit of information - altogether, the work presents a juxtaposition of information and noise, as a reflection of the experiences of the scientists who study this astronomical phenomenon. Continuum features visual art by Perth-based artist Rina Freiberg, created in live response to the audio, presented as a time lapse of its creation.
The composed work was shortlisted for industry presentation at the APRA AMCOS High Score Summit, connecting international professionals creating sound art and music for interactive systems and gaming.

‘Pond’ theorises gravitational waves as human interactions on a horizontal axis, particularly of an intimate nature, and the external effect that can be perceived from an individual unit on its external environment. Featuring spoken word contributions from multidisciplinary artist Rina Fu (recorded presenting her writing on gravitational waves at the Gingin Observatory) and both Mandarin and English research extracts from STEM partner Dr Linqing Wen, the work integrates floating articulations of the human voice and manipulated brass valves, set over a flowing synthetic compound.
